How to organise a dinosaur birthday party the children will never forget

If your son or daughter is going through the dinosaur phase (and we all know it is a phase that lasts years), a themed birthday party is a sure-fire hit. This is the guide we wish we had had the first time round.
Decorations: green, orange and plenty of footprints
There is no need to spend a fortune. Three elements are enough:
- Colour scheme: greens and oranges, with touches of earthy brown. Balloons, bunting and a tablecloth in those shades will give you 80% of the atmosphere straight away.
- Dinosaur footprints: cut footprints out of card and make a trail from the entrance to the table. It is inexpensive, and the children follow it like a game.
- Toy dinosaurs dotted around the table and play areas: the ones they already have at home will do perfectly.
Games that work
- Fossil excavation: hide small dinosaurs in a tray of sand and give the children paintbrushes and little sticks to ‘excavate’ them. It keeps them thoroughly entertained.
- Dinosaur egg race: the classic egg-and-spoon race, but with eggs painted with spots.
- Musical dinosaur statues: when the music plays, they roar and move like dinosaurs; when it stops, they freeze.
The cake
A green cake topped with plastic dinosaurs (thoroughly washed) and a chocolate volcano looks spectacular without the need for professional fondant work. Cupcakes with crushed-biscuit ‘soil’ and a dinosaur on top are another foolproof option.
The finishing touch: celebrating among real dinosaurs
If you want to go a step further, you can celebrate the birthday at Dinolandia: dozens of life-size animatronic dinosaurs in a pine woodland, with picnic tables for party snacks and plenty of space to run around. There is a special rate for groups of more than 18 people, and children under 3 get in free.
